Hello! It’s almost time. Time to celebrate the legends that are mammies. On Sunday 10 March we get to let down our hair, put the feet up and bask in the adoration of our offspring. And then we wake up from that lovely dream and bring them to whatever match, training or birthday party we promised and get on with living our best mammy lives. And that, as we know, usually involves getting drenched on some sideline or other at some stage over the weekend. Still, it’s Mother’s Day. A day when we celebrate the fact that mammies run the world. I mean we don’t get nearly enough credit for all we do, we know that. But sure look, a little bit of appreciation goes a long way. All we have to do now is remind the kiddos that it’s coming up! Funny thing is Mother’s Day tends to be less about you as a mam who knows where everything is, when you’re in the middle of raising children, and more about your own mother. It’s the referral upwards of love and appreciation and a wondering how she didn’t kill you while she was raising you. If you’re lucky enough to still have her, it’s about showing the appreciation, for all she did, when you were too young to appreciate all she did, but now that you’re a parent yourself, you appreciate all she did. It’s about memories and love and cake – because there should always be cake. And in those five minutes before you head to a muddy pitch somewhere, it’s about the handmade cards, and soggy cereal delivered for breakfast, and smiles and Happy Mother’s Day wishes, before your day gets on with being Sunday. Safe in the knowledge that one day, when they’re old enough to properly appreciate all you did – you might get cake for breakfast. Happy Mother’s Day to fabulous mammies everywhere. And gentle thoughts to those finding this day hard. Mind yourselves xxx
