Hello! Happy New Year everyone! And so begins a prolonged period of writing down the date incorrectly as we all settle in to 2024. I always feel a bit meh after Christmas. When the Christmas tree and decorations come down, the house can look so bare. And the darker evenings can feel all the darker without the twinkling lights. But this year I’m going to flip the script. This year I’m going to embrace the darkness. Not in a Darth Vader kind of a way, you understand. But in a being at one with the cosiness of winter kind of way. The New Year’s resolutions are still intact (well it’s still early-ish January) and I shall find a way to improve my diet. No one, after all, is buying my argument that chocolate should be considered one of the major food groups. In spite of my best and most convincing efforts.

But it shall not all be about sacrificing chocolate, sometimes. And sometimes is subjective anyway, right? One woman’s sometimes is another person’s “sure chocolate biscuits don’t count”. Nope, most of my resolutions are about finding the joy in life, wherever it can be found. And mostly that’s in the simple, everyday opportunities. Those little things we take for granted. Like when the kids come home from school and say “there’s no homework today”. Those unexpected meet ups with friends. Or singing in the shower. Though, to be honest, I’m not sure that last one brings quite as much joy to everyone else who lives here. And I shall embrace the darkness of these winter evenings and cosy up on the couch when the house is finally quiet. And I’ll even try to be glad for the day’s noisy moments too.
